Since most of what we see about prison comes from sensational TV and film portraits, I think it is important to hear prison life for the millions of people who are locked up worldwide, to be informed about. So now I turn the question back to you: how is life actually behind bars – especially the parts that most of us have no idea at all?
Perhaps most people you know take the worst about people in prison, and although in some cases that can be true, reality is much more complex. Many are simply regularly-ended people who have made unfortunate mistakes. Most days do not want to fight and stick to themselves. You just try to get through the days.

Perhaps you were not prepared for the fact that struggles in mental health care are everywhere, and it can really affect your prison experience when prisoners have no support. In some cases, people with mental disorders are thrown into prison instead of getting good treatment. It is difficult to witness – add, the general insulation, stress and regret weighing on everyone.

Maybe you shocked to see how many people actually preferred to stay in prison. You saw some released, just to return. Some even admitted that they felt safer and said: “At least I get a meal every day.” It was a hard memory of how ruthless life can be on the outside – and how, for some, freedom is not as liberating as it seems.
